Origins & ARPANET

The Cold War Roots

The internet’s story begins in the midst of the Cold War. In 1958, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower created the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite. The U.S. feared falling behind in science and technology.

One of ARPA’s key concerns was communication. The U.S. military wanted a system that could survive a nuclear attack. Traditional telephone networks relied on central switching stations that could be easily destroyed. The solution was a distributed network where information could find alternative paths if one route was cut off.

This led to the development of packet-switching technology. Instead of sending a continuous stream of data, messages were broken into small “packets” that traveled independently and were reassembled at their destination. This made the network resilient and efficient.

The Birth of ARPANET

In 1969, ARPA established the ARPANET, the first operational packet-switching network. The first node was installed at UCLA in September 1969. By December 1969, four nodes were connected:

  • UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles)
  • Stanford Research Institute
  • UC Santa Barbara
  • University of Utah

The first message sent over ARPANET was intended to be “LOGIN.” The system crashed after sending just “LO,” making the first successful message simply “LO” – an accidental but historic moment.

Email and Early Growth

In 1971, Ray Tomlinson invented email, allowing users to send messages across the network. He also chose the “@” symbol to separate the user’s name from the host computer’s name. Email quickly became ARPANET’s most popular application.

International connections followed in 1973, with links to Norway and England. By the mid-1970s, ARPANET had grown to include over 60 nodes.
